When Marvel announced last year that a limited series based on the hugely popular comic storyline, Secret Invasion would be coming the Disney+, the speculation started running wild. All the pieces were coming together. The Skrulls were introduced into the MCU in Captain Marvel, which would include pivotal characters from the comic, there was a possibility of recently dead characters being revealed to be Skrulls meant there was a chance we could get them back, and it was a possibility it could be leading into the next huge Marvel event on the horizon. but let’s be honest.. announcing that it would be a streaming show almost certainly relayed that the budget would be nowhere near enough to give this justice. So it looks like we’re getting a significantly scaled-down story with little to no similarities to the comic. There’s nothing wrong with that, I just think the name is misleading.
After the first episode, I can say I enjoyed the setup. But to be honest, this shouldn’t have been called Secret Invasion. With all due respect to Marvel, having a bunch of their human B and C characters helping Nick Fury to stop the invasion is highly underwhelming. This feels more like a prelude to the actual story. Maybe the story of Nick Fury gathering information before he calls the Avengers for help. It would’ve been more appropriate to call the show “Fury” or “Secret Warriors”. As it stands, the name is a little misleading for what we are actually getting.
Not to say that they couldn’t deliver with what they have. Rotten Tomato ratings aside, I’ve enjoyed nearly EVERY Marvel TV and streaming show that’s been released… even the ones that are questionably MCU adjacent. There was a great episode story arc for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. where the secret spy organisation was being taken over by LMD’s (artificial life forms). That story was done very well on a limited TV budget. So it is possible to do it. With only 6 episode I hope Secret Invasion can deliver a great story that won’t seem like a watered down version of it’s superior comic book counterpart.
