My Favorites of My Favorites: Supernatural

Very few shows can stand the craziness that is Supernatural, the… uh… “supernatural” thriller series that ran on first The WB, then The CW for 15 seasons. After the well crafted 5 season story arc from creator Eric Kripke, someone thought “…let’s do another decade of seasons and try to escalate things to the point of utter madness.”

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Throughout the series run, the Winchesters have fought ghosts, demons, angels, vampires, werewolves and many other monsters for various folklore. And when they ran out of ‘monsters’, they elevated to Gods and Devils, including Greek, Norse, and Christian deities.. eventually culminating with Lucifer… and then the BIG BOSS… GOD. Don’t believe me? Check out this ‘supercut’ of recaps from all 15 seasons, and me you don’t want to watch this show:

Over its 327 episode run (!!!), there have been a wide range quality of episodes, from the ‘not so good’, to ‘simply incredible’. I see a lot of 10 Ten Episode lists, so I decided to do my own. If you ever get the time, you should give the show a try. Push through the first ‘monster of the week’ season and get to the second to really catch the show in it’s element:

#10. “What Is and What Should Never Be”

Dean is attacked by a Djinn and finds himself in a new reality where his mother is still alive and a mysterious woman holds the key to everything.

 #9 “Baby”

Seen entirely from the point of view of “Baby”, the Impala, Sam and Dean go on a road trip to fight monsters and demons.

#8 “The Monster At The End Of The Book”

Sam and Dean are shocked to discover a series of comic books titled “Supernatural” that accurately detail their lives as demon hunters. They track down the writer, Carver Edlund (guest star Rob Benedict), who explains he has visions of the brothers that he then turns into comic books. Chuck reveals that Lilith (guest star Katherine Boecher) is coming and she has a plan for Sam.

#7 Fan Fiction

When Sam and Dean investigate the disappearance of a teacher, they are stunned to see the school is putting on a musical based on their lives. Familiar faces abound in this 200th milestone episode.

#6 The End

Sam tells Dean he wants to rejoin Dean in the battle of the Apocalypse, but Dean tells Sam that they are better off apart. Later, Dean awakens five years in the future in an abandoned city and is attacked by humans who have been infected with a demonic virus that turns humans into Zombies. Zachariah (guest star Kurt Fuller) appears to Dean and explains that this is the world that exists as a result of Dean saying no to helping the angels fight Lucifer. Dean meets up with Future Dean, who tells him that the virus is the Devil’s endgame for destroying mankind. Misha Collins also stars.

#5 Changing Channels

The Trickster throws Sam and Dean into an alternate universe where they are characters in different television series, including a sexy medical show, a Japanese game show, a forensics show and a sitcom. The brothers realize the only way to get out of this world is to play along and become the characters in the shows. However, Castiel appears and warns them this universe is dangerous and they must get out before they become trapped.

#4 Lazarus Rising

4 months after dying and going to Hell, Dean wakes in a pine box. He’s been freed from Hell. He has a joyful reunion with Sam and Bobby (Jim Beaver), but it isn’t long before the three wonder what exactly pulled Dean from Hell and what it will want in return.

#3 The French Mistake

Raphael (guest star Lanette Ware) launches an attack on Castiel and his allies, sending a particularly frightening angelic hitman (guest star Carlos Sanz) after Balthazar (guest star Sebastian Roché), Sam and Dean. In an effort to protect the brothers, Balthazar sends them to an alternate universe where they are the stars of a TV show called “Supernatural” and they are actors named “Jensen Ackles” and “Jared Padalecki.” The brothers are confused when Castiel appears to be a tweet-happy actor named “Misha Collins” and Sam is married to Ruby (Genevieve Cortese).

#2 Swan Song

The entire season has been leading up to this showdown between good and evil. With the Apocalypse looming, Sam and Dean realize they are out of options and make heart-breaking decisions that will change their lives forever. A beloved character is killed.

#1 All Hell Breaks Loose (Part I/II)

Sam is abducted by the Yellow-Eyed Demon and finds himself in a ghost town with other children who have special abilities. They learn the Demon has brought them together to initiate his endgame: an all-out war against the human race. In an effort to encourage Sam to fight, the Demon shows him what really happened to one of his parents. Dean enlists Bobby’s (guest star Jim Beaver) help to find Sam before the battle begins, but he arrives too late.
