My 10 Favorite Marvel Television and Streaming Shows

As a big-time MCU fan, delving into the pool of streaming shows has been one hell of a journey filled with epic adventures, compelling characters, and thrilling storylines. From the streets of Hell’s Kitchen to the cosmic realms beyond, each series has offered a unique perspective on the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe.

From the groundbreaking exploration of grief and identity in “WandaVision” to the pulse-pounding action and moral complexity of “The Punisher,” these shows have redefined the boundaries of superhero storytelling, pushing the envelope with bold narratives and dynamic characters. Whether it’s the gritty realism of “Daredevil,” the reality-bending spectacle that is “Loki,” or the heartwarming coming-of-age tale of “Ms. Marvel,” each show offers something unique for fans of all ages. So in the spirit of the intense Reddit discussions I’ve had this week, let’s countdown my top 10 favorite Marvel streaming shows.

1. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

This is my FAVORITE Marvel show of all time.. hands down. The first show out the gate after the success of the first Avengers movie, Joss Whedon and his brother Jed resurrected Phil Coulson to run an S.H.I.E.L.D. early response team that ‘initially’ was supposed to present the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the perspective of normal humans. But because if internal politics at Marvel between the film and television divisions, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had little to no access to movies. So it had to exist on the fringes of the MCU, just making slight references to what was happening parallel to the movies. There were faint references to some movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron, and other were some movie characters like Nick Fury and Lady Sif, but enough to tie itself with the proper MCU.

But although this was a major roadblock, it forced the show to pivot and take its own direction. The first 2/3’s of season one were pretty formulaic.. very ‘tv prodecural’. But once the show stopped trying to be in the ‘MCU’, it began to flourish! The characters evolved, the stories became CRAZY, and the show dialed up the fun factor. It became a series that got better with each season, getting more outrageous, while the team evolved and the world of AoS became filled with robots, magic, superpowers, and time travel. The show was supposed to end in season 5, but Marvel gave it two more shortened seasons to finish the story and it was glorious. I feel bad for people who gave up on the show mid-way through the first season. Ask anyone who is stuck with it. This show is AMAZING.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” follows a team of skilled agents led by Agent Phil Coulson, as they navigate the complex world of espionage, intrigue, and superhuman threats. Tasked with protecting the world from extraordinary dangers, they encounter enhanced individuals, alien artifacts, and sinister organizations. The team’s dynamic includes the tech-savvy Fitz-Simmons duo, the resourceful Melinda May, and the charismatic hacker Skye, later known as Daisy Johnson. Throughout its seven seasons, the series explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the blurred lines between good and evil, offering fans a thrilling journey through the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe.

2. Falcon and The Winter Soldier

The first ‘cinematic’ MCU series from Kevin Feige, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier picks up right after we left Sam and Bucky at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The show documents Sam Wilson’s journey and struggle to except the role of Captain America in a country politically, racially, and philosophically divided. What I loved about this show was showing the choices, mistakes, and inevitably the responsiblities of both Sam and Bucky along this journey. Sam struggles with his worthiness of carrying the role and the shield after Steve Rogers. And Bucky’s struggle of integrating back into a world where he’s no longer a soldier. Mixed in these tow parallel journies, we get some great fringe MCU lore and characters sprinkled in for a show: Sharon Carter, Baron Zemo, Isiah Washington (the first Black Super Soldier), and the first appearance of John Walker (the governments choice for the new Captain America). Excellently acted and directed, Kari Skogland does a great job of embracing the look and tone of the all the Russo Brothers Cap movies to fit this show in as a quality continuation to the Steve Rogers trilogy. It real is a six hour motion picture, as Feige explained it.

“Falcon and The Winter Soldier” follows Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as they navigate a world without Captain America, grappling with their own pasts and the emerging threats of a post-blip society. The duo confronts systemic challenges and new adversaries, including the enigmatic Flag Smashers and the shadowy figure of the Power Broker. Exploring themes of legacy, identity, and responsibility, the series delves into the complexities of heroism and redemption, blending intense action sequences with poignant character development. As Sam grapples with his decision to take up the mantle of Captain America, and Bucky seeks to make amends for his past, their partnership is tested in a high-stakes battle for the soul of a fractured world.
