One of my favorite game genres over the years has been the 3rd person tactical shooters. It started when I became obsessed with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas in 2006. I played this religiously on the Xbox 360 until, of course.. the sequel, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 dropped two years later. After I got my fill of these two games, I tried to pivot to other Tom Clancy games to keep the party going. But none of them seemed to ‘hit’ like the Vegas series. I went through a ton of games.. from the “Rainbow Six” and “Endwar” series to the very popular “Splinter Cell” games. None of them seems to give me that feeling I had with the Vegas series.
I wasn’t going to give up yet. I was making my way through the “Ghost Recon” series of games, and I was having the same underwhelming feelings. But then, for some reason, I decided to try Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands for the third time. And that playthrough stuck! I became hooked on the massive open world and the breadth of operations you could run. The upgrade system of a little lacking but just good enough to keep me going. I ended up playing through Wildlands three times after that. And when I’d done everything I could, i started looking at the sequel Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint for my next big obsession. I expected it to be a proper sequel and retain the controls and gameplay, just in a different location. But the overall feel of the game didn’t feel as smooth as Wildlands. So I stopped playing. But lately, I’ve been seeing some excellent gameplay on YouTube, so I’m going to give it another shot. Let’s hope this time it sticks because it looks like it’s just as much fun as Wildlands… if not more!
