As the year quickly wraps up, we comic book readers know the pickings start to get slim on Wednesdays. This week, (with the exception of one Bat book) it was all Marvel. Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly reboot The Thunderbolts once again under The Winter Soldier’s leadership, Jason Loo launches Sentry #1 with a new take on the character, the street-level heroes continued with the ongoing “Gang War” storyline this week in Amazing Spider-man, and we got some solid issues of X-Men, the Avengers, and Batman. But the pick of the week (as usual) has to go to:
Comic Book of The Week:
The Invincible Iron Man #13
Out of all the books sporting the Fall of X banner, The Invincible Iron Man (a non-mutant book) seems to push the status quo forward to most. I didn’t expect Tony Stark’s partnership with Emma Frosh to be that interesting, but Gerry Duggen’s take on Tony and integrating him into the fight against Orchis has been simply wonderful. The cool thing in this run is you get to see Tony’s technical prowess and his ability to play the ‘long game’ strategy. Issue #13 sees the duo using their pool of allies to help them mass an army to fight against the mutant oppression.
Not only is Duggen’s writing knocking it out of the park, but artist Juan Frigeri is back at the pencils this issue. The guest artists have been great, but Frigeri’s style has set the tone for this story and it feels good to have him back. Throw in some guest appearances from Ironheart, Starfox, and Forge, and you got one hell of a story that’s ramping up to what I hope is a all-out war to end all wars.
