A lot of Marvel comics this week. Venom War and Absolute Power are still the big events of the moment. But for my pick of the week, I had to go to the Ultimate Universe…
Comic Book of The Week:
Ultimate Black Panther #8
Camp / Noto
To be honest, even though I love the character of The Black Panther, and I loved the movies, I’ve never really been able to get into the whole vibe of the comic. Even when Ta-Nehisi Coates was writing his epic run, it just didn’t grab me. But there’s just SOMETHING about Bryan Hill’s reimagining of T’Challa and Wakanda in this new Ultimate Universe. It feels very familiar, yet very fresh. It possesses all the elements of Black Panther that I love, just without (i believe) the baggage. I think hands down this might be one of the best comics Marvel is putting out right now. Hopefully poeple will discover it in trade because this comic is great.
Im this issue, Ra and Konshu are continuing their attack on Wakanda. T’Challa continues to try and understand his new psychic connection to the Vibranium and how the new elements fits into Konshu’s plan for Wakanda. And Storm and Killmonger continue their quest to look for allies to help in the fight against the new Gods. As per usual, Hill’s writing is solid and Stefano Caselli is KILLING IT consistently on the are, similar to his runs on X-Men and Captain Marvel.
If I have to give criticism to this book, it’s that the issues seem to run a little short. I don’t know… it might be that a blaze through the pages so quickly it seems short. In any case, this book keep getting better and better. With all the Ultimate titles seeming to be building to something happening toward the end of the year, I think Black Panther will be at the heart of the first Ultimate Universe 2.0 major event.
