This was a standard week for my books. Venom War keeps rolling on. Quality X-books keep dropping with great stories. And DC brings Absolute Power to a close, as well as setting the stage for a new era for DC comics, AND the launch of their ‘Ultimate Comics’-like brand, ‘Absolute Comics’. And with DC making these moves, there’s only one book that was on top of my stack…
Comic Book of The Week:
Absolute Power #4
Waid / Mora
I’ll be honest… I’m usually very intimidated by DC events. I’m sure the stories are good, but the amount of ‘tie-ins’ that drop around their events makes me feel lost. Sure, Marvel does the same thing, but I know Marvel’s history and have read all the reboots and resets so that I can pay attention. I think DC Metal is the one that broke me. It was a story I wanted to get into, but I was lost at the beginning so I walked away. But there are some events that I loved from DC. “DCeased” and “DC vs. Vampires” to name a couple. So when I saw “Adsolute Power”, I decided to ditch ALL of the tie-ins and just run with the story. And it was damn good! A nice tight 4-issue series with some major ramifications for DC.
Full disclosure, I didn’t read any Absolute Power unit the 4th issue dropped. I wanted it to be a full read and not month-to-month. What I got was a tight story from Mark Waid and some awesome are from Dan Mora. The story? Standard stuff. The heroes hatch their last ditch effort to stop Amanda Waller, Failsafe, and the Brainiac Queen, only using their wits since they were depowered. Honestly, I have to admit, cutting out the tie-ins might not have been such a good thing, since the 4-issues seem to go pretty fast and wrap up pretty quickly. I felt like it didn’t get enough room to breathe… WHICH IS WHAT THE TIE-INS ARE FOR! Any any case, the heroes beat the villains, recognize their mistakes and how they let something like this happen, and put together a solution, which will be DC’s next focus… Justice League Unlimited… mirrors the excellent animated series.
I kinda of glossed over a lot of this, but let me be clear, I LOVED the issue… the whole series. I included ‘Absolute Power’s free comic additions’, as well as ‘Absolute Power: Ground Zero’ in my reading which was a nice lead-up to the event. This felt a lot like Marvel’s ‘Secret Empire’ mixed with ‘Devil’s Reign’, which is a good thing. I’m hoping when the Omnibus comes out, it’ll include the relevant tie-ins so I can get the full scope of the event.
