Nothing much to say this week. All-in-all, a enjoyable pull list this week. My Marvel load was a little light, so I threw in a few DC books I wanted to check out when i had time. But the highlight of the week, is the latest addition to Marvels resurrection of the Ultimate Universe, and it seems, like as time, it’s going to be the new flagship for the Ultimate Imprint. This week’s pick is…
Comic Book of The Week:
THE Ultimates #1
Camp / Frigari
At first, I didn’t know how I would feel about the reboot of the Ultimate Universe and a new angle on The Ultimates. The original Ultimate books (except vol. 3) were truly incredible and with this book in the hands of Deniz Camp and not Jonathan Hickman, I was pretty suspect about doing the material justice. But as I got through the first dozen pages, any worries I had were washed away. This new take on the Avengers roster building was very enjoyable… throwing in time travel, reality warping and finding replacements for heroes that have already fallen. Brilliant!
In a world reshaped by the diabolical genius known as The Maker (read Hickman’s Ultimate Invasion limited series), no heroes emerged. Through time travel, he prevented anyone from becoming a superhero and established The Maker’s Council, a secret society of supervillains ruling from the shadows. But the Maker’s reign ended when Howard Stark imprisoned him in The City. Now, Howard’s teenage son, TONY, dons the mantle of Iron Lad, teaming up with a broken Reed Richards, known as Doom, to undo the Maker’s work. Their mission begins with the daring rescue of the frozen Super-Soldier, Captain America, and the liberation of the imprisoned Asgardian god, Thor, who is trailed by his warden, Sif. The Maker’s Council, desperate to protect their dominion, sends Captain Britain to stop them. The battle is fierce, leaving Thor wounded and Britain losing an eye to Iron Lad. As the Council retaliates, launching an attack on New York City via Stark satellites, Tony and his allies narrowly escape, now branded as terrorists…
Camp seems to get the voices of the character right, with a slight ‘different reality’ twist—just enough to work for story. Juan Frigeri’s pencils feel like a nice cross between the original Ultimate art and Marvel’s standard ‘limited series’ style.. and i appreciate it.
This book was a BIG surprise. For a while I’ve been looking for ‘Wednesday must reads’ and I think Camp’s Ultimates book has just made the list.. replacing the ended Avengers Twilight.
