This was a pretty good week for me. I got a lot of stuff I’d been expecting to read. We got the penultimate issue of Gerry Duggin’s run on Invincible Iron Man, some suggested Spider-woman and She-Hulk issues, a few more Blood Hunt tie-ins, and a Batman issue sneaking into this all Marvel pull list. But when it comes to picks of the week, it’s almost a certainty when Jonathan Hickman drops an issue. So…
Comic Book of The Week:
Ultimate Spider-man #6
Hickman / Checchetto
The cool thing about this reboot Ultimate Spider-man by Jonathan Hickman is week get some great world-building along with Peter Parkers condensed rise as The Spider-man in this new Marvel 6160. Last issue we got a nice origin story of Harry Osbourne becoming The Green Goblin (as a hero) and this issue we get him and Peter teaming up to confront the new Kingpin of Manhattan, Wilson Fisk. Unfortunately, the first heroic confrontation doesn’t go as well as they expected, as the World Council has given Fisk a power upgrade! Throw in the entire story being Parker telling the whole story to his family as a way of revealing his new super hero antics and you got a classic issue, reminiscent to some of Brian Bendis’ best work on the original Ultimate Spider-man.
Hickman’s writing is excellent as usual, and Checchetto’s pencils are rough and scratchy and give this world a unique look that separates it from the 616 universe. This is quickly becoming my new ‘day one must read’ when it drops. And that’s good because i don’t really have too many of those these days. With the exception of the mange-inspired Ultimate X-Men (it’s just not for me), the line-up of comics and heroes slowly being cultivate in this new universe is turning out to be something special. With Jonathan Hickman in the mix, YOU KNOW there’s some epic storytelling somewhere far down the road, after they get done building up the roster of heroes. The Ultimates and Black Panther have excellent starts and I CAN’T WAIT for the first Ultimate Universe event.
