With each week of the new year, the quality of comics seems to be slowly building up. We got movement for both the “Gang War” and “Fall of The House of X” events, and the 3rs issue of the surprisingly good “ALIEN” comic from Marvel. But of course, how can Cbip Zdarsky and Daniel Acuña release an Avengers event comic and it not take the number one spot?
Comic of The Week:
Avengers: Twilight #1
Take the Avengers, destroy them, and build a dystopian future with the dream of freedom that has gone wrong. That’s right! Yet another future tale of The Avengers fighting the future. I know it sounds like I’m making fun of this story, but damn… HOW I LOVE IT. Chip Zdarsky’s “Avengers Twilight” has the DNA of some previous popular ‘Elseworlds’ stories. This feels like Marvel’s version of DC’s Kingdom Come, with a dash of House of M, Age of Ultron, and all the other stories of the future gone wrong. That being said, I LOVED THIS USSUE. Of course, this was just the establishing 1st issue, but Zdarsky did a great job of worldbuilding and setting up the story. Basically in the future, the American people have chosen security over their freedoms (interest, the goals HYDRA’s had in Secret Empire, as well as the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier). Now and older de-powered Steve Rogers is brought into the battle for freedom against James Stark, the son of the original Iron Man and The Wasp
I enjoyed Chip Zdarsky’s long-run Daredevil, and his writing here seems to be on the same level. And to deliver the one-two knockout punch, you get Alex Ross on the cover art, and Daniel Acuña drawing the main story. There are no negatives here! It doesn’t feel like anything new, but who cares? This is a well they can go back to over and over and I’ll be there every single time. I’m not sure if this is a stand-alone story outside of continuity, or is it has something to do with the current Twilight Dreaming storyline going on in Jed MacKay’s current run on The Avengers. The name would suggest there’s a connection, but that story hasn’t concluded. Regardless, Avengers: Twilight feels like its going to be a fun ‘what if…’ ride through what the Marvel 616 could be… and I’m on board for it all.
