Marvel’s finally putting in work on the comic book side… at least in my opinion. ‘The Sabertooth War’ continues in the pages of Wolverine. The Amazing Spider-Man works to wrap up ‘Gang War’. And I finally got 2 Batman reads that I enjoyed. But of course, Acuña and Zdarsky dropped the 3rd issue of Avengers: Twilight. So it has to be the comic book of the week.
Comic Book of The Week:
Avengers: Twilight #3
Zdarsky / Acuña
What else can I say about this limited series? Somehow Chip Zdarsky is a pro at writing compelling stories about lone heroes fighting against an overwhelming system. He did it on his run in Daredevil, and now he’s continuing it with an aged Captain America fighting against a future American fascist regime. This issue, Steve goes to The Raft (former super-villain maximum security prison) to rescue Tony Stark from the clutches of his son, James Stark. And Zdarsky hasn’t forgotten the key to Avengers comics, is the ‘assembling’, and in addition to Tony Stark, we get the assist form Kamala ‘Mis. Marvel’ Khan, and the epic return of Thor… with the dopest dialog bubble so far. this year:
I can’t keep finding new ways to praise Daniel Acuña’s art. His art got me back into reading Marvel comic books, and this artwork doesn’t disappoint. Avengers: Twilight is a classic tale of Steve Rogers showing the world what The Avengers stood for, while pushing back against an already cenacle country. Again, this is basically Frank Millar’s “The Dark Knight Returns” in Marvel-form.. And that makes it even more awesome. Excellent issue.
