Before Anthony Starr blew up playing the icon Homelander on The Boys, he played the lead role in one of my favorite tv shows of all time: Banshee. Set in the small, fictional town of Banshee, Pennsylvania, and follows an ex-convict who assumes the identity of the town’s murdered sheriff, Lucas Hood. He originally came to town to reconnect with his former lover and accomplice, Anastasia, who has built a new life under an assumed name.
The show excels in blending high-octane action with deep, character-driven narratives. The show’s creators, Jonathan Tropper and David Schickler, masterfully weave together themes of redemption, identity, and vengeance. The town of Banshee itself is a character, teeming with dark secrets and a colorful cast, including an Amish gangster, a tech-savvy criminal mastermind, and a Native American tribe fighting for their land. The series is renowned for its brutal fight scenes, intricate plot twists, and morally complex characters. “Banshee” pushes the envelope with its raw and unapologetic storytelling, making it a standout in the realm of action dramas. Its intense atmosphere, coupled with top-notch performances, especially by Starr, ensures “Banshee” leaves a lasting impact on its viewers, securing its place as a must-watch series in the 2010s television landscape.
