Build a Reusable Prompt Card
The useful unit in a prompt library is not a wall of instructions. It is a small record that tells you when to use the prompt and how to judge the answer.
Six Fields Are Enough
Name
Use an action and an outcome: Audit a Landing Page, Compare Three Proposals, or Build a Shot List.
Use When
Describe the moment that should trigger this prompt and when another method would be better.
Inputs
List the context, files, examples, and decisions the user must provide.
Instruction
State the task, sequence, constraints, and treatment of missing information.
Output
Specify the exact structure that makes the answer usable in the next step.
Checks
Add a short human review list for facts, tone, completeness, and risk.
Name: [action + result]
Use when: [trigger and audience]
Inputs: [required material]
Task: [what to do]
Process: [ordered steps]
Constraints: [limits and exclusions]
If information is missing: [ask, label, or stop]
Return: [format]
Check before use: [verification list]
Discovery rule: tags should describe the work, not just the tool. “Research,” “image editing,” and “meeting notes” will remain useful when a model name changes.
Original Source and License
Inspired by the searchable, community-maintained collection at prompts.chat. The platform states that shared prompts are released under CC0. This page uses an original card structure rather than reproducing an individual community submission.
