It’s starting to look more and more like the comic book storyline. Throw in the Fantastic Four and we got a party.
Tomorrow, Marvel’s dropping the final trailer before Captain America: Civil War’s release on May 8th. I can’t wait. Ahead of that, the released two teaser trailers highlighting the opposing teams. The Cap trilogy has been my favorite of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. I think Captain America: Winter Soldier to the best of the bunch. I have high hopes for this one.. even more than Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. And for the record, i’m #TeamCap all the way.
It seems a lot of my favorites this year came out of nowhere. The element of surprise might be that extra added ingredient that keeps these things in my brain. Rick Famyiwa‘s Dope was that movie for me. The modern day coming-of-aged story of 3 high school punk rock nerds, who are obsessed with 90’s Hip-Hop and navigate the streets of Inglewood, California feels very personal to me for many reasons. Firstly, this film is shot very honestly on location in the neighborhood, which I grew up in. Secondly, push this story back to the 80’s and you pretty much got my life growing up. Alongside the excellent Hip-Hop soundtrack (featuring my favorites like Nas, A Tribe Called Quest and Disable Planets), is originals songs produced by Pharrell that serves at the main characters’ nerd angst.
I know this list is long, but this was a very good year for movies. From excellently filmed, directed and acted projects, to ridiculously braindead fun. I enjoyed movies across the entire spectrum this year. NOTE: Keep in mind that there were A LOT of movies I didn’t get to. Concussion, Bridge of Spies, Spotlight, The Revenant and others are still in the cue to check out.
The Rest of The Pack
I was planning to go see The Force Awakens sometime in January. With the big sellout on early tickets, I expected the theaters to be a madhouse for the couple months. Luckily, my wife talked me into taking a chance to search for tickets. i found tickets for for a Sunday evening show.
From start to finish, this movie delivers EVERYTHING that is Star Wars. I know “the magic is back’ is a cliche, but it applies so nice to this movie. After the bad taste of the prequels, J.J. Abrams seventh installment seemed to rehash ‘A New Hope’.. but in a good way. But felt like Abrams went that to square on and followed a rough guidelines of Episode 4 and pulled it off- almost envisioning what A New Hope would’ve been with modern tech ology. Kudos to J.J. Abrams. Even though this movie came out the last couple weeks in 2015, it has definitely made into my list of Top 10 movies.
